Safety features are essential in any nursery. Here, host Bea Pila shows how easy it is to equip a room with a few basic items for baby's protection. - Outlet plug covers (figure A) are inexpensive and will protect curious fingers when the baby gets a little older and begins to explore.
- For parents who have vertcial blinds in their child's nursery, cord clips (figure B) are a necessity. Since blind cords are doubled and secured with a pull at the bottom, the lengths actually can get hung around a baby's neck and cause him to choke.
- Choke testers (figure C) provide an easy way to gauge which toys are too small for children under three years. If the toy fits in the cylinder, store it safely out of reach until the child is older.
- Crib bars should be close enough together that a standard vegetable can (figure D) cannot fit in between. Bars any further apart pose a hazard since the baby's head can become lodged between them.
- Rounded corner guards (figure E) should be fitted on any sharp corners in the room to protect a baby's head in case he or she bumps against them. Here, they're used on the corners of the fold-out changing table.
- Velcro door latches (figure F) provide an easy way to prevent toddlers and young children from accessing non-childproof items inside the closet.
- Finally, sliding plastic latches (figure G) provide a higher level of safety for children once they've passed the toddler stage.
