Jackie Ostrowski demonstrates a masking product that allows croppers to layer multiple stamps and colors, without image "bleed." Materials: Assorted spring-themed stamps (in this example, "Fred the Dog" and a watering can are featured) Masking Magic? Sticky Dots? adhesive Mounting squares Embossing heat tool or blow dryer Dye-based inks Pigment inks Scroll and brush markers Stipple brush or sponge Various papers and cardstocks Cutting board or mat Craft knife Scissors - First, create a subtle rainbow gradient background in the upper left hand corner of the page. Position masking strip on the page, then apply stripe of ink. (figure A). Once dry, re-position mask and repeat until entire rainbow is complete.
- When background has dried, stamp "Fred the Dog" and watering can onto page approximately 1" from bottom edge.
- Then, create masks for the stamped images. Begin by stamping the same image onto Masking Magic strip using dye-based ink (figure B).
- Set image with heat tool or dryer held 2-3" from the image (figure C). Once dry, carefully cut around edges of stamped image to create the mask.
- Layer masks over corresponding stamped images.
- Stamp a new motif (in this example, flowers are used) over the masked dog and watering can images. Leave masks in place, then use same technique in step 2 to create a mask for the flowers. Note: Each flower stamped will require its own mask.
- Once stamped flowers have dried, cover with masks.
- Stamp a new motif (this time, a picket fence is used) over all masked images.
- Then, create a mask for the picket fence (or alternate stamped image) and apply.
- Leaving all masks in place, use a stipple brush or sponge to create the desired background (figure D).
- Add additional stamped embellishments to the page (around the masked images) as desired.
- Then, remove all masks to expose the crisp, layered images (figure D). Color stamps.
- Adhere title and photos with Sticky Dots, mounting squares and other adhesives to complete the page.
