This project should take about 2 hours, and is simple enough for most older children to successfully complete. It's a great way to recycle old lampshades and bring European flair to any room.

Laura Pattynama demonstrates her technique for creating European-style lampshades.

    Lampshade
Fabric & lining (enough to generously cover the lampshade)
    1/2 yard fabric for trim
    2 yards ribbon
    Kraft paper
    Pencil
    Ruler or yardstick
    Sewing machine
    Pins

    1. Place kraft paper over the lampshade and pencil exact shape. Add seam allowance of 3/4" to each side and top; add 1" to the bottom.

    2. Center pattern on the fabric (figure A) and lining and cut around it. With right sides together, seam all the way around side and top perimeters. Turn right side out and press.

    3. Cut trim fabric for the bottom of the shade. Trim should be 4" wide and as long as the bottom of shade, with an additional inch added to the dimension. Fold length of fabric in half, right sides together and sew 1/2" seams on either side. Then, turn right side out and press.

    4. Then, fold under a 1" seam allowance at bottom of sewn shade pieces. Insert raw edges of trim 1/2" and pin in place.

    5. Cut 6" lengths of ribbon and insert them at each end of trim between trim and right side of lampshade fabric. Insert and cut the ribbons at a 45 degree angle away from the corner, with ribbon flowing toward the center of the shade ( figure B).

    6. Sew bottom edge of slipcover, including the trim and ribbon.

    7. Next, pin all sections together (figure C) and sew together the two sides of the lampshade using a 1/4" seam on the outside edge. (Seam should be visible on the outside of the shade.) This should create a cylindrical shape that will drop over the lampshade.

    8. Finally, arrange the slipcover over the lampshade and tie all bows.
