- Frieze: Comes in different weights and thicknesses, with a plush nap (figure A). This is the most durable carpet for residential use.
- Plush: Also known as Saxony or textured carpet. This carpet will show more shading and footmarks than other types.
- Berber: The surface can be hard to clean and seams can be hard to blend (figure B). Pets can easily catch their nails in the surface.
- Carpet construction is more important than weight and type of fiber.
- Fiber density applies only to "plush" styles of carpet. Plush carpets do not have twisted fibers, instead they have dense fibers (figure C). Density is important for the person who doesn't want to see foot marks in the traffic pattern on the carpet.
- A good pad prolongs the life expectancy of any carpet.
