Pet Odors and Keeping Pets Out of Houseplants

    • If your dog or cat gets skunked, you can remove the odor by using feminine douche. First, place some petroleum jelly over the dog's eyebrows to prevent the douche from getting in his eyes. Take the douche and saturate the dog's coat (figure A). There is no need to rinse the douche off, just towel your pet dry.

    • If odor is not the problem and you just want to clean your dog or cat, a micro-fiber cloth dipped in warm water works beautifully. It removes loose dander and hair.

    • To keep odor down in the litter box, add an odor eliminator in the box with the litter. Sprinkle it in and then sprinkle the litter over it. You could also use baking soda.

    • You can add regular table salt to the litter if your cat has fleas.

    • To keep your pet's food bowl clean, spray some nonstick cooking spray in the bowl before putting the food in (figure B). The bowl will be easy to wipe clean -- plus, the little bit of oil is great for your pet's skin.

    • Before vacuuming up litter with a hand vacuum, you can prevent the soiled littler smell by placing a dryer fabric softener sheet where you would put the filter. Besides absorbing the odor, it will absorb the dirty gritty dust and prevent it from blowing back.

    • To discourage your cat from digging in your plants, put a little oil of cloves on a cotton ball and simply bury the cotton ball below the surface. Cover it with a little soil. It won't hurt your cat or plant, but will prevent your cat from digging.

    • If pets like to eat your plants, you can spray a product called Bitter Apple (available from pet stores) onto your plant. It will not hurt your animal and they will leave your plants alone.

Queen of Clean's Dirty Little Secret:

    • To remove pet hair from furniture, wipe it with a damp sponge or fabric softener sheet.
