    Figure B

Crafter Mary O'Neil turns a throwaway wooden crate into an elegant footstool.

    Materials:

    Old wooden crate
2 pieces of 1/2" plywood measured to fit top and inside of crate
    Batting (optional)
    Firm foam padding
    Spackling compound or wood putty
    Putty knife
    Sandpaper
    Fabric adhesive
    Fabric of choice
    Finials or screw-on legs
    Iron
    Staples
    Upholstery staple gun
    Wood glue
    Large wood clamps
    Decorative upholstery tacks (optional)
    Hammer

    1. Spackle or putty over nail holes and burned-in writing or logos on crate's surface. Allow to dry, then sand smooth.

    2. Measure and cut fabric into strips slightly larger than box sides. Iron edges of fabric under before adhering to sides of crate.

    3. Use fabric adhesive to apply fabric to sides.

    4. Fasten legs or finials by screwing into the wooden edges (figure A).

    5. To create top, layer plywood, foam and batting (figure B).

    6. Cut fabric a few inches larger than layered top. Wrap around and staple to secure edges of fabric beneath the padded top.

    7. Use wood glue to secure smaller wooden board to upholstered top. Next, use clamps to press pieces together and allow to dry for 24 hours.

    8. Nail upholstery tacks around edges (if desired) and add top to crate.
