Cove molding is added to add a more finished appearance to the base of the bookshelf and a protective finish is applied. Materials: Cove molding Table saw Small nails and electric nailer (optional) 1/4" plywood (for back) Sandpaper or hand sander Clear varnish or polyurethane Brush - First, cut cove molding to desired length (one piece for front and two for sides) and miter the corners (figure A).
- Nail the molding into place against the base (figure B). The cover molding will hide the securing the side and bottom panels.
- Sand and finish the inner dimensions of the bookshelf. Avoid using stain -- which can make the difference between plywood and solid oak noticeable. Instead, use a clear varnish or polyurethane and allow to dry.
- Cut, sand and finish the shelf and allow to dry.
- Cut the 1/4" plywood to fit within the rabbets on the back edges of side panels. Sand, finish and allow to dry thoroughly. After the panel has dried, drop into rabbets and nail into place.
- Add adjustable shelf.
