Once the side panels, bottom and supporting top are assembled, the decorative top is routed and secured to the bookcase. Materials: Router with carbide-tipped bit (for best results) Oak strips (for base trim) Marker Saber saw Sandpaper or hand sander Woodworkers glue Clamps Drill and 1 1/4" screws - Begin by routing the front edge of the decorative top -- the solid piece of oak added earlier. For best results, use a carbide-tipped blade (which is less likely to burn the wood) and make 2 passes with the router (figure A). Be sure to clamp panel securely into place before beginning.
- After routing the top, route the sides. Then, after the side and front edges fo the decorative top have been routed, place the decorative top directly onto the surface of the supporting top (figure B). Countersink holes from inner surface -- near the edges -- up through the top. Use 1 1/4" screws to secure without coming through the top surface.
- Use base trim to dress the bottom edge. Cut piece to size and miter the outer corners. Then, mark and cut an arched opening on bottom edge of the base trim.
- Use saber saw to cut the arch (figure C). Slowly cut around the curved areas and use a fresh blade for best results.
- Sand the piece, glue into place, clamp and allow to dry. Later, countersink screws (figure D) directly into the base trim (working from the underside).
