If you're tired of a room or just want to change it seasonally, take a hint from home economist Deborah Durham. She shows Edye Ellis, host of HGTV's Today at Home , how to perform a room makeover inexpensively and easily. A cozy bedroom, filled with a jewel-toned mix of patterns in paisleys, stripes and plaids, is perfect for cool winter nights. To lighten the bed for summer, Deborah stitched tailored sheets into a reversible duvet cover, striped on one side and solid on the other. Standard pillows are tucked into matching king-size pillowcases and tied with decorative cording (figure A). An inexpensive particleboard table, made to be layered with tablecloths, is stripped of fabric and spray-painted, for an airy look (figure B). The heavy window treatment is replaced by a simple drape made from a king-size sheet with twill-tape ties (figure C). To add ties to a sheet, evenly space lengths of twill tape along the contrasting band of the sheet (figure D), and machine-stitch in place. Deborah spaced the ties about 8" apart and cut them 1 1/2 yards long so they could be tied into bows. This complete bedroom makeover was done very inexpensively. The materials -- three sheets, a couple of pillowcases and a can of spray paint -- cost less than $100.
