The focal point upon entering the room is a small seating area featuring two simple chairs with clean lines. To the left of the seating area are the sofa, tables and armchairs, whose placement reflects a designer practice known as "floating." This is a trick that brings the furniture out into the room instead of keeping it lined up against the walls. The furniture is slipcovered in shades of white muslin (which produces a sense of unity among the unmatched shapes), and the coffee table has been painted a glossy white to cover its original black finish. The softened, traditional shapes of the pieces are a good foil to the hard-edged urban atmosphere of the large space (figure A).

The dining room features the homeowners' graphic black table and matching chairs -- the dark pieces work well on the black-and-white tile floor. At the rear wall of the room is an old buffet, which has been painted white (figure B). The designers both agree that a traditional item painted in an unexpected color can add punch to a room's decor.

The armoire has been rescued from its drab, dingy chocolate-brown finish with a coat of glossy white, and its door panels have been replaced with tin for a more industrial look.
