  • Plantation Guest Room: Finishing Touches
  • Find out how coffee can help tie a lamp in to the rest of the bedroom furniture.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-207

The guest room makeover is almost finished. The walls have been painted a soft, restful green; a headboard has been painted directly on the wall; and the furniture has been lightened and enhanced to reflect the new vintage country look of the room.

    Materials:

    light blue spray paint
    strong coffee
    tinted varnish

    1. The last project is updating the bedside lamp. Wearing a protective mask, Andrew spray-paints the base blue.

    2. While the base dries, coffee is brushed over the surface of lampshade, both inside and out (figure A).

    3. Next, the base of the lamp is antiqued with the tinted varnish; the tint helps tie the lamp in to the rest of the room furnishings (figure B).

    4. The room is put back together and accessorized to include pictures of the baby (figure C).

The new room is certainly more inviting than the old space. New shutters and a headboard painted directly on the wall help enlarge the look of the small space. Using stencils all the way around the space also make it feel bigger, as does the lighter look of the furniture. This restful space may soon be the most requested and occupied room of the house (figure D) (figure E) (figure F) (figure G).
