The room is almost ready to be "pressed" into service. But first Golden needs to add items that will serve as both decorative focal points and functional accessories.

Beside the hanging ironing board, she adds a retro stool (figure A), which can be used either as seating when ironing or as a step-stool for reaching items on high shelves.

White wood shelves (figure B) are hung over the washer and dryer for displaying functional items.

Expert tip: Interior design expert Wendy Tittsworth suggests using crockery or ceramic containers to store necessary laundry-room materials such as detergent and bleach. Items such as these have to be able to withstand heat and moisture, and Tittsworth points out that the crockery or ceramic containers will add color as well as utility to the space.

Golden adds an aesthetic touch with new cabinet hardware (figure C) and old-fashioned calendar pictures framed in identical black frames (figure D).

The final touch is a tweed rug (figure E), which provides additional color to the room. Golden cautions that you should use nonskid padding underneath the rug, especially in view of the heat and moisture found in typical laundry rooms.
