Goldfish can live 20 years or more. Learning the needs of a goldfish can provide years of enjoyment and good health.

Thayne Maynard of the Cincinnati Zoo, offers these tips for proper goldfish care:

    • A goldfish can grow to 6" in length, so provide more room than the ordinary bowl.
    • Goldfish require a large amount of oxygen, so a 10 gal. aquarium is ideal.
    • Use an aerator stone to increase oxygen level.
    • Keep the aquarium temperature 50-70 degrees.
    • Avoid overfeeding -- excess food can create ammonia, which is fatal to goldfish,
    • Goldfish enjoy spending the summers in the outdoors in a shaded pool or pond, but be sure to bring them indoors before the first frost.
