Fish need variety in their diet just as much as humans do. Try feeding your fish some different foods in addition to their usual diet of fish flakes. Some fish are vegetarians, so veggies such as lettuce, parsley and spinach are a great treat for them. Simply drop a few leaves in boiling water for about 30 seconds, cool and feed them to your fish. Remember to remove any uneaten food from the tank after about an hour in order to keep the water fresh. Omnivorous fish eat both plants and meat; frozen algae or shrimp (the kind you get at the pet store, not the kind you get at the grocery store!) are tasty additions to their diet. Carnivores need an all-protein diet to survive. Feeding them live minnows or guppies may seem like a good idea, but actually it's one way to introduce disease to an aquarium. Instead, give them bits of beef heart -- but be sure to offer it on toothpicks or string, not with your fingers! A fish won't know the difference between its meal and your potentially yummy hand.
