Smaller dogs like this pug appreciate shorter walks than their long-legged colleagues.

Dogs need and naturally crave exercise, and walking them is one of the best ways for them to get it. How much walking is appropriate depends on the dog. Here are some guidelines:
- Smaller breeds like a pug can't go as far as bigger breeds like labradors and spaniels. With their shorter legs, they'll tire more quickly.
- Keep the weather in mind. Hot weather takes its toll on dogs, just as it does on people. If your dog starts panting heavily during a walk, he may have had enough. Make sure your dog doesn't get overheated, and make sure he has access to plenty of water after a walk. Also, hot pavement can burn a dog's feet. During hot weather, it's better to walk dogs on grass.
- If your dog is new to taking walks on a leash, start out slowly with shorter walks. Gradually icrease to longer walks over time to build your dog's endurance.
