In order to create space for display and storage, the designers added a couple of unusual accessories: stainless-steel ladders (figure A). Leaned against the wall flanking the armoire, the ladders (which are new ones, so there are no unsightly paint splatters or rust spots) hold accessories on their rungs -- and come in handy when an overhead light bulb needs replacing. The shelf unit along the long wall is an inexpensive home-improvement-store purchase: steel frameworks with particleboard shelves (figure B). Berkus explains that he simply left out one shelf to create an entertainment center. He also points out that since lofts generally don't provide much storage space for necessities such as linens, this type of shelving can do double duty as needed.
Golden points out the lighting along the ceiling: halogen MR-16s with a gray powder-coated finish, which she had installed to replace the old bullet-type fixtures. The new lighting is high-tech yet low-profile, so they take up very little visual space but add a sculptural element. You can also buy gel covers for these lights to change the atmosphere of the room very easily.
