Soften any window with easy-to-make fabric shutters that coordinate with your room decor.

Nancy Golden, host of DIY's Decorating and Design, shows how to create window shutters from cabinet doors and fabric. Materials:
Wooden cabinet doors
Fabric
Tape measure
Staple gun and staples
Glue gun and glue sticks
Trim
Door hardware (drawer pulls, etc.) - Choose cabinet doors that are flat on both sides. Measure the width and length of the door and double both measurements for your fabric panel. Be sure to choose a print rather than a stripe or a plaid: it will be easier to work with.
- Fold the fabric in half horizontally, so it fits the door lengthwise and is twice the door's width. Fold the side under and begin attaching the fabric to the door at the top, pleating and stapling as you go. (You may, if you wish, secure the raw edges with a little hot glue; or you can just fold it as you go.) When you get to the other side, fold the raw edge under as before. Pleat and staple the bottom edge also.
- Apply trim to cover the top and bottom edges. Fold under the ends of the trim and hot-glue it in place.
- Attach a drawer pull or other type of fastener to each panel.
