Golden shows what she did to transform the dining room's "fifth wall" -- the ceiling. To add interest to the rather small room (and to emphasize the central chandelier), she added an inexpensive but elegant ceiling medallion (figure A). Available at home stores, ceiling medallions come in a variety of styles and can be easily attached with caulking compound and a few finishing nails. The one Golden chose is a neoclassic design, in keeping with the style of the room, and she opted to keep it white -- in such a small room (the ceiling is a standard 8' high) a darker medallion would have visually lowered the ceiling.
Golden also discusses another treatment to adorn a ceiling: wallpaper borders (figure B). There is an almost infinite selection of borders on the market, and they can be used as is or trimmed to emphasize features of the design. A wallpaper border is traditionally used on the wall near the ceiling, but Golden suggests using strips of a border to trim out about 12" to 16" around a chandelier.
The window treatment in the dining room looks elegant but was actually deceptively simple to make (figure C). Made from a heavy tapestry fabric and lined with a contrasting color, each semicircular treatment was folded down about an inch in the center and tacked with a needle and thread to create a soft drape. The treatments were then attached to drapery clips and hung from a fluted gold rod mounted on gold sconces. The focal point of the valances, however, is the trim: heavy, luxurious beading that adds weight, movement and shine (figure D).
