It's wonderful to snuggle up with a warm quilt in the wintertime. Betty Ann Lasley of the Putnam Company shows how to make a beautiful quilt with no sewing--a perfect project for people who don't have time to sew. Materials: Fusible web Iron Brown fabric for gingerbread-man designs White cotton fabric for the background, cut 36" x 36" Border fabric (could be the same as the backing fabric) Backing fabric Flame-retardant quilt batting Grosgrain ribbon approximately 1" wide Gingerbread-man design (from a coloring book or cookie cutter or drawn freehand) Paper Small brown and green pompons Fabric glue Small red rickrack Scissors Needle 1/8" red ribbon - Cut out a piece of white fabric approximately 36" by 36" or the desired size of the quilt. Measure diagonal lines for placing grosgrain ribbon strips to create diamond shapes where motifs will be placed.
- Draw around a gingerbread-man design from a coloring book or a cookie cutter, or draw your own on a piece of paper. Cut out this paper template.
- Iron fusible web onto brown fabric to be used for the gingerbread motifs.
- Trace around the gingerbread template on the paper backing of fusible web. Trace several rows of gingerbread men on the paper backing (figure A).
- Cut out each gingerbread man. Leave the paper backing attached.
- Apply fusible web to the back of lengths of grosgrain ribbon that will be used for the diamond-shaped grid. Remove the paper backing of the fusible web, and iron the ribbon strips to the white background fabric (figure B).
- Peel the paper backing from the gingerbread motifs, and fuse them to each diamond-shaped space, using a dry iron. Follow the manufacturer's directions for applying the fusible web (figure C).
- Glue brown pompons onto the gingerbread-man faces for eyes, using fabric glue. Glue two green pompons onto the front of each gingerbread man for buttons (figure D).
- Iron fusible web to the back of 6"-wide pieces of fabric for the border, and fuse them to the outside edges of the quilt (figure E).
- Cut a piece of backing fabric 36" by 36" or the desired size of the quilt. Cut a piece of flame-retardant quilt batting the same size.
- Place the backing fabric on the work surface. Place the batting on top, then the decorative appliquC)d quilt top.
- Thread a needle with 1/8" red ribbon. Insert the needle at the neck of each gingerbread man from the front, go through all layers to the back, and come back up to the front near the first hole. Tie a double knot, then a bow. Clip the ends. Tie identical red bows around the border. The bows will hold all three pieces of the quilt together (figure F).
- Fuse quilt binding to the edges of the quilt to hold the three layers together (figure G).
