Once the textured paint compound has dried overnight, Golden returns to the walls to add a coat of colored paint. She once again chooses the eggshell base color and applies it to the textured portions of the walls (figure A). Now that the walls have that Old World feel, the ceiling must not be neglected. Golden plans to add faux wood beams to the ceiling for a final architectural touch. The beams she recommends are made of polystyrene and are available at any architecture-supply company. These beams will not damage the ceiling structure, just give it a little flare. Note: At this point in the project, it would be a good idea to have an extra set of hands.
- Measure the ceiling for placement of the beams and use the markings on the ceiling to draw a level line.
- Cut the wood blocks for beam supports to 5-5/8" and drill a hole into the center of each block with a 1/4" drill bit.
Important safety tip: Always wear safety glasses or goggles when working with a power tools.
- Measure for placement of blocks on the ceiling (figure B).
- Hold each block to the ceiling and dimple for position of toggle bolt. A 5/8" paddle bolt is needed to drill a hole for the toggle bolt.
- Insert toggle bolt into wood block and attach block to the ceiling (figure C).
- Attach faux beams to blocks with 1-1/2" trim screws, screwed into the sides (figure D).
- Apply a thin coat of textured paint compound to the ceiling to add depth (figure E).
- Golden adds a final coat of glaze mixture (1 part paint to 4 parts glaze) to the wall with ragging mitts by applying the glaze and blending it (figure F). She applies this for two reasons: first, the glaze will help protect the wall from actually peeling; and second, the glaze brings out the texture and dimension of the paint. The drying time for this stage of the project is 4 hours.
