DIY Decorating & Design host Nancy Golden shows how to create a great-looking patterned wall, similar to the look of expensive harlequin-patterned wallpaper, with paint and a homemade paint stamp.

    Materials:

Satin-finish latex paint in putty for base coat
    Paint tray and roller
    Silver latex paint for accent
    Rubber gloves
    Clean rag
    Level
    Pencil
Piece of plywood to make stamp
    Saw
    Wood glue
    Old towel
    Foam paintbrush
    Taupe latex paint for diamonds

    1. Apply a base coat of putty-colored paint to the wall, and let dry.

    2. Add dimension to the putty-colored background by using a rag to apply a random pattern of silver paint. Twist your wrist back and forth to alternate the pattern (figure A). Let the paint dry.

    3. Make a paint stamp with a piece of plywood in a diamond shape. Use wood glue to attach an old piece of towel to create the stamp (figure B). Let dry.

    4. Draw a plumb line on the wall, and use a level to mark the horizontal points where the diamonds should line up.

    5. Pour taupe-colored paint into a paint tray. Use a foam brush to brush some of the paint up on the angled part of the paint pan to create a stamping area (like a big ink pad) for the stamp. Dip the stamp into the paint (figure C), and stamp the wall (figure D). There's no need for it to be perfect: imperfections and variations add charm to a hand-painted wall.

    6. Use a sponge brush to add little ends of diamonds at the edge of the wall where an entire diamond won't fit (figure E).
