The flying bird in this mural wouldn't fool the eye because it's frozen in space. True trompe l'oeil is best achieved with stationary objects.

This shelf with a vase on it is an example of true trompe l'oeil. Painted stationary objects give a more convincing illusion of reality than objects in motion.

This large fashion illustration of Sophia Loren will back the orchestra pit at an award event at the Museum of Modern Art.

Chris Madden, host of HGTV's Interiors by Design, visits the studio of the Evans and Brown Collection in San Francisco for an inspiring look at high-end mural painting. Mark Evans and Charlie Brown do a wide variety of wall murals for homes and businesses, including landscapes, large fashion illustrations and true trompe l'oeil painting, which simulates the look of architectural detailing.

Their work covers all periods and styles of art and requires a great deal of research and painting expertise: one day they paint art-deco style, the next as prehistoric artists and the next in 18th-century style. Their thorough grounding in art history makes them invaluable to clients.

Clients are referred to Evans and Brown through designers or architects. After the concept of the project has been determined, Mark does the research, design and development, and Charlie implements the creative work.

The murals are very rarely painted directly on walls. Usually a mural is painted on canvas in the studio, often over a period of months; then it's rolled up and taken to the project site for installation. After it's been glued to the wall, the mural appears to be part of the wall but can be steamed off if the client moves.
