The semigloss base coat Golden chose for the room is an icy blue. She chose this color because she will use a painting technique called colorwashing to add subtlety to the walls. This technique is just what the name implies: washing the walls with color. For the pool house, Golden wants to create the feeling of being surrounded by water. She plans to use a glaze mixture (3 parts glaze to 1 part paint) to colorwash the walls. Tip:Because glazes can be messy, it's a good idea to wear rubber gloves when working with them. It's also a good idea to place a dropcloth down or tape off what you don't want to be painted. - Dunk a cotton rag into the glaze mixture (figure A).
- Squeeze (figure B) out the excess paint.
- Wash the walls (figure C). There is no wrong way to do this.
Expert tip:Decorative painter Kelly Keener suggests working in a 3' section to keep a wet edge and consistent pattern.
