One of the most useful accessories in any nursery is a rocking chair, and Nancy Golden shows off an example of how much a little paint and some green-and-white fabric can improve the looks of an old brown chair. Beside the rocking chair she places a white-wicker three-tier stand that can hold bottles, diapers or anything the new baby may need.

The changing table, another nursery must-have, is actually a thrift-shop chest of drawers that has been painted white. Green plastic knobs with the look of old glass have been added for a touch of color, and the bumper pad on top is covered in the green-and-white gingham with toile welting.

The crib (figure A) is a work of art: a white sleigh bed with removable rails (for the not-too-distant future, when the baby will be old enough for a junior bed). Two different sizes of gingham form cover the bumpers and the bedskirt; the smaller check has more of the toile welting.

In one corner of the room is an overstuffed, slipcovered club chair --perfect seating for one parent while the other is rocking the baby. The chair includes a fluffy, toile-covered pillow for added comfort (figure B).

The Bare Facts: Consider buying a changing table pad with a lip in the front. This will help prevent the baby from rolling off -- but remember: Never leave a baby unattended on a changing table!
