Authors Nancy Smith and Linda Milligan have written a series of informative books teaching kids to sew with a sewing machine. Designed for boys and girls aged 7 and up, the I'll Teach Myself series can enable children to work independently. The books offer in-depth instructions and project ideas, including the unique birthday card featured here.

    Sewing Tips for Kids

    • Crafty Kids host Diana Canova recommends that kids use a beginner's sewing machine because of the ease of use and specially adapted features (figure A).

    • Kids should practice sewing a maze pattern or a dot-to-dot pattern. These patterns will help them learn how to follow straight lines and change thread color (figure B).

    Birthday Card

    1. Cut the plastic report cover to fit over the note card.

    2. Decorate the card with your personal treasures.

    3. Place plastic over the decorated card and sew around the edges (figure C).
