If you've got tools, you need places to keep them--and ways to carry them. Tool belts are the ultimate in portability (figure A), fitting around your waist to hold the tools you use the most. Don't overload your tool belt, though, or you could strain your lower back. A tool backpack is also extremely portable, featuring several compartments for different types of tools (figure B). Plastic toolboxes have partitions you can insert where you need them (figure C). They're handy for sorting nails and screws. A tool caddie has a tool belt on the outside and stacking shelves inside (figure D). Creating a Homemade Toolbox Many different kinds of toolboxes are commercially available, but if you're a picky or thrifty craftsman, why not create your own? Materials:
Cutlery tray Two pieces of stock 1/2" wider than the cutlery tray and the height of your choice, for the sides of the box Two pieces of stock the same height as the sides and the width of your choice, for the front and back of the box One piece of stock the same width as the front and back pieces and the same height as the width of the sides, for the bottom of the box Wood glue Screwdriver and screws Two 1"-wide strips of wood the same length as the front and back of the box Dowel - Glue the sides of the box to the front and back of the box, and screw to secure (figure E). Screw the bottom of the box into place.
- Secure small strips of wood along the inside length of the box for the tray to slide on.
- Use a large dowel as a handle (figure F), or choose something more durable, such as a piece of stock with holes cut out (figure G).
