In this segment, host Fuad Reveiz installs the treads and the hardwood on the landing.

Installing Treads

1. Begin by taking the measurements of "all" the treads, and then transfer these measurements to the treads and cut them using a circular saw. Stack them in order as you cut.

2. Back inside install the first tread on the stringer by pre-drilling three holes into the tread and riser, than attach it with 2-1/4" trim screws.

3. Start at the bottom (figure A) and work your way up the steps so that you can add extra screws into treads from the back of the riser above it. Make sure to space the holes on the treads evenly since you'll be able to se the wood filler after the steps are finished.

4. Add a 2x4 brace between the stringers at the top step, which will give extra support to attach the final tread to since you're at the end of the run.

5. Fill in all of the screw holes left in the treads with some matching wood putty (figure B).

   Installing the Hardwood on the Landing

6. First, add some 15-lb. roofing felt to the area.

7. Install the nosing border (figure C) that's cut at a 45-degree angle by pre-drilling the wood, and attach with 2-1/4" trim screws.

8. Since the nosing has a groove facing out, insert a spline (figure D) in order to create a tongue for the wood flooring to connect to.

9. Use a rubber mallet to hammer the hardwood planks into position, and then secure it in place using a pneumatic floor nailer.

10. Stagger the planks as you work you way across the landing. As you reach the last few rows the floor nailer won't fit, so use a regular nail gun with finishing nails in the edge of the boards.

11. The last run next to the wall requires you to rip cut the boards. After ripping the last piece, cut it to length and secure it in place.

12. Finish the landing's new hardwood floor by filling the holes with wood putty.

In the final segment, Reveiz will install the handrail and spindles (balusters).
