    Materials:

    Recessed lights
    Cordless drill
    Drywall saw
    Utility knife
    Screwdrivers
    Studfinder
    Circuit tester
    Wire strippers
    Pliers

Note: Recessed lights are also called "can lights" and are great for reading. They sit above the ceiling drywall. If there's insulation in your ceiling, you'll need to choose insulation-compatible lights and lower wattage bulbs.

    1. Locate the ceiling joists and use the provided template (figure A) to mark a hole between the joists. Score the line carefully with a utility knife, and then cut along the inside of the knife line with a drywall saw. If the hole is even a little too big the can may not clamp properly.

    2. Make sure the power is turned off at the circuit breaker.

    3. Run electrical cable from a power source to the hole, leaving at least 16" of extra cable to make the wiring easier.

    4. Open the light's junction box. Usually there's a plate that pops off.

    5. Run the cable into the box (figure B) and clamp it. Strip the insulation and make matching wire connections -- black, white and ground.

    6. Fold the wires into the box and replace the cover.

    7. To set the light, pull in the clips, slip the can's box into the hole, and then push the can's body into the hole until it's snug.

    8. Using a screwdriver, push each clip up and out until it clicks and clamps the fixture into place (figure C).

    9. Attach the trim ring according to the directions of the particular style you've chosen.

    10. Turn the power back on and enjoy the warm glow of your new lights.
