Wedding designer Mary Hollman Allen of Sew Easy Textiles shows how to make a quick, easy, creative and economical centerpiece for the top of the cake.

    Materials:

    1" thick foam disk
    8" molded plastic foam heart
    2" plastic foam ball
Plastic wedding couple (or substitute teddy bears or silk flowers)
    Corsage pins
    Double-ruffle lace
Drawstring lace (with a channel down the middle)
    Serrated knife
    White glue
    Low-temperature glue and glue gun
    Pearls on a string
Embellishments (silk flowers, ribbon roses, thin satin ribbon, etc.)
    Scissors
    Metal nail file

    1. Make what Mary calls a "punch ruffle," starting with the foam disk, double-ruffle lace and nail file. Using the point of the file, poke the edge of the lace into the edge of the disk. Working your way around the disk, poke the lace in about 3/4" deep. No glue should be needed to hold it. Cut the lace when you complete each row (figure A).

    2. Place the second row of lace on top of the disk about 1/4" from the edge and poke it into the foam as in step 1 (figure B).

    3. Apply the third row inside the second row, toward the center of the disk (figure C).

    4. Cut a plastic foam ball in half. Position one half near the back of the disk, not in the center. This will form a stand. Glue the half-ball in place. Use corsage pins to hold it down while it dries (figure D).

    5. Cover the foam ball with double-ruffle lace.

    6. Place the heart on a flat cutting surface. Cut the heart apart at the bottom with a clean, smooth cut. Gently pull apart, and apply tape to the ends of the heart to protect the lace from getting caught. (Note: Separate the foam by pulling the two ends forward and backward, not side to side. This way, the foam is less likely to snap.) Remove the center ribbon in the casing lace, and carefully thread the lace over one end of the heart. Slide the lace all the way around the heart, bunching it together to make the ruffles as full as you wish. You'll need approximately one and a half to two times the distance around the heart to make a nice ruffle. Experiment with the lace to see how full you want it to be (figure E).

    7. Glue the tip back together with white glue, using corsage pins to secure while it dries. It is not necessary to remove the tape before gluing.

    8. To attach the heart to the top of the ball, apply a bit of low-temperature glue to the top of the ball, and glue the tip of the heart to it. Use corsage pins to secure the heart to the ball and add stability. Don't worry about the pearl heads showing: they can be covered with additional ribbon or blended in when you add the pearls (figure F).

    9. Use white glue to secure the wedding couple to the disk. Place them on top of the disk, in front of the heart.

    10. Cover and embellish the centerpiece with additional ribbon, silk flowers, satin ribbon roses and pearls (figure G).
