"America's Flower Man," Dale Rohman of Beyond Concepts, explains how to make a funny wedding centerpiece out of cabbage and other vegetables.

    Materials:

    Head of cabbage
    Bottle of wine or champagne
    Carrots
    Black olives
    Green and red peppers
    Sliced onions
    Carrot
    Straight pins
    Corsage pins
    Toothpicks
    Flowers
    Pipe cleaners
    Bridal veil
    Sharp knife
    Grass-type packing material
    Red spray paint
    Floral wire
    Black paint
Piece of lace or old lace curtain
    Ribbon
    Stapler
    Tulle
    Pearls
    Baby's breath

    1. Cut an X with a sharp knife near the base of the cabbage but not through the stem. Cut away a little of the cabbage around the X to make an indentation, and push the cabbage down onto the top of a wine or champagne bottle at the indentation (figure A).

    2. Spray-paint grassy-looking packing material with red paint. Place it on top of the cabbage, and hold it in place by pushing short pieces of floral wire through the packing material into the cabbage (figure B). This represents hair.

    3. Make the ears by cutting wedges of green pepper and placing them on the sides of the cabbage. Hold them in place with toothpicks pushed into the cabbage. Eyes start with slices of white onion held to the cabbage with straight pins. Then place a black olive in the center of each sliced onion for pupils. Hold them in place with straight pins. The nose is a carrot. Create the lips by slicing off the bottom of a red pepper and securing in place with two corsage pins with pearl heads (for teeth). Eyelashes are made by painting toothpicks black and poking four of them into the cabbage above the onion slices (figure C).

    4. Make arms by twisting four pipe cleaners together. Wrap them around the neck of the bottle, and twist. Bend pipe cleaners to form the arms.

    5. Make a dress from a piece of lace or old curtain, gathering it between your fingers and stapling the gathers about one-third of the way from one end. Wrap the gathered lace around the neck of the bottle, and tie with a ribbon, letting the upper third of the lace overlap the dress like a loose collar (figure D).

    6. Slit the lace overlap near one arm, and wrap the back piece around the pipe cleaners to make a sleeve around the arm (figure E). Repeat on the other side.

    7. Add a veil by tying a piece of tulle with a ribbon and placing it on the head, securing it to the cabbage with floral wire. Tuck a few sprigs of baby's breath into the veil. If you like, add pearls for earrings as well as a necklace, a floral bouquet, etc.
