Get started on your dollhouse's beautiful boudoir.
Even the most deconstructed loft needs some furniture, and fashion dolls aren't known for their minimalist lifestyle. Michele Beschen—who can build furniture out of everything from tree branches to PVC pipe—has the solution with some easy-to-build dollhouse furniture sized just right for fashion dolls.

Scroll down to learn from Michele Beschen and her aunt DeDe how to create a fashion doll-sized bed. In Part 2, they'll show you how to B. Original with these principles and create a houseful of furniture for your fashionistas.

    • Cut a scrap of luan plywood to 13" long and 6-3/4" wide.

    • For the legs, cut two pieces 1x2 wood to 6-3/4" wide. Glue the legs to the short sides of the luan, flush with the edge (figure A) and secure with small nails.

    • For the mattress, cut a piece of foam the same size as the luan. A scrap from an old mattress pad makes a good quilt: Lay the foam on the mattress pad, then fold the pad up and glue it to the foam on the short edges (figure B). Lay the bed frame face-down on top of the foam, wrap the long sides of the mattress pad around the frame and staple it to the underside of the frame.

    • For the headboard, use a utility knife to cut a piece of foam board to size. Cover the board with a piece of batting and then fabric and flip the assembly over. Hot-glue the batting and fabric to the back of the board, folding the corners as though wrapping a package. Cut a panel of fabric to cover the folds at the back of the headboard and glue into place (figure C).

    • Repeat the process to make the footboard.

    • Use coordinating fabric to make the bedding, if desired. To make a pillow, take an 8" piece of fabric, fold in half, and sew almost all the way around. Turn the pillow right-side out, stuff with fiberfill and stitch closed.

Your doll has the beginnings of a beautiful B. Original boudoir. Go to Part 2 for ideas on other fashion doll furniture!
