    Finished Balinese bedroom.
Decorative painter Shannon Kaye brings the look of Bali to ordinary bedroom furniture using paint and stencils.

The plain bedroom set is prepped for paint by sanding the entire surface with 150-grit sandpaper. Sanding is done in a circular motion to prevent grooves. After sanding, the furniture is wiped down with damp paper towels and then a tack cloth is used to remove any leftover dust or residue. A tack cloth is cheesecloth with varnish.

    Furniture bases are painted.
A coat of tinted primer is applied to the furniture then the finished paint goes on top. Tinted primer provides great coverage and assists in reducing the number of finish coats.

The drawer fronts are stenciled in a cane pattern.
For a tropical inspiration, a cane-pattern is painted onto the drawer fronts. The stencil template is laid onto the surface and the paint is dabbed on. When stenciling, remember –– less is more. Dip the stenciling brush in the paint then blot off the excess before stippling the paint onto the surface of the furniture.

    Completed tropical-inspired furniture.
The same tinted primer is used on the wooden drawer pulls and then a coat of metallic paint is applied for a sparkling touch of glamour.
