Jean Gorman shares a decorative fabric technique that utilizes "nature's stamps" -- leaves of all shapes and sizes! Materials: Canvas to fit table Scissors Ruler Tape String Pencil Small plastic dish Fabric paint Foam brushes Flat leaves in various and sizes -- some with stems Waxed paper Brayer Sewing machine Thread Iron and ironing board - Wash fabric to remove any sizing (which will prevent fabric paint from adhering properly) and allow to dry.
- Lay the fabric out flat on a large work surface. Cut to form two 45" squares. (Note: The fabric may shrink a bit after washing and drying.)
- Measure and mark a point in the exact center of the fabric. Cut a 2' piece of string, tape one end over the center point, and tie the other end around a pencil so that the pencil tip meets the outer edge of the fabric along one selvage edge. Pulling the string taut, and holding the pencil straight up and down, move the pencil around the fabric until you've drawn a perfect circle all around (figure A). Cut out the circle. Repeat on the other piece of fabric.
- Lay one circle of fabric face up on a work surface. Use craft stick to mix paint in dish until desired colors are reached.
- Brush a thin coat of paint over the veined side of a leaf (figure B). Place the leaf, paint side down, on the fabric. Cover the leaf with waxed paper and use brayer to roll over it several times. Gently pull the leaf up from the tip. Repeat with a fresh coat of paint until you're ready to change colors. Arrange the leaf prints artfully across the tablecloth.
- Rinse the brush and mix a new color of paint. Begin making leaf prints using leaves of smaller sizes or different shapes, placing randomly over the fabric (some can overlap). Use branch to create prints to join some of the leaves.
- Allow the paint to dry.
- Clip 3/8" V-shaped notches every 6" to 8" around the perimeter of cloth (figure C), then fold and press a 1/2" double hem on each, and pin in place. Topstitch the hem, beginning at the first fold, then around the perimeter of each cloth (figure D).
- Press with an iron or place in a clothes dryer (following manufacturer's directions) to set the painted design.
