  • Thank You and Sympathy Note Etiquette
  • From "Greetings from DIY"
    episode DGFD-104

    From Peggy Post.

Two important things about writing thank you notes: Write with sincerity and do it promptly. There are several types of thank you notes. Write notes for the following occasions:

    - after receiving a gift
    - to thank someone for a kind gesture
    - to thank someone for a favor
    - to thank someone for a recommendation

    Wedding

Whatever the gift--whether a place setting or a gift of time or talent--it must be acknowledged. Thanks can take many forms, but they must share one common guideline: They should be prompt. The bottom line is that a separate, handwritten thank-you note must be sent for each wedding present you receive.

    Baby

    Thanks should be sent to:

    - someone who hosted a shower for you.
    - people who loan you furniture, maternity clothes, etc.
    - people who had gifts or flowers delivered to the hospital.
    - people who provided home-cooked meals, etc.

    Sympathy

When writing notes of sympathy, say what you truly feel. Sit down and write as soon as you hear of the death, and let your thoughts be with the person you are writing.
