Carl Mueller creates a textured section of wall with plaster.

    Blue paunters tape
    Joint compound
    Texture roller
    Trowel
    Whisk broom
    14" taping knife
    8" taping knife
    4" joint knife
    Cornering tool
    14" plastic mud pan
    Scratcher trowel
    6" brush

Begin by masking a section of wall with blue painters tape. Apply plaster and use a texturing technique before removing tape. Use 14" taping knife to trowel joint compound onto wall about 1/8" thick, then use one of the following techniques to create texture:

    • To create texture, use the taping knife to create broad, sweeping strokes (figure A). Or after applying and smoothing the compound, use a clean broom to gently sweep from top to bottom.

    • Fingers can be used to draw in wet compound, or a scratcher trowel (figure B) can create stripes or a basketweave design.

    • Press the taping knife against the surface, the pull away to create a bumpy surface.

    • Allow textured area to dry at least 24 hours before painting as desired.
