    Materials:

Pen holder (design of your choice)
Wood sealer (Right Step Satin Varnish -- 2-oz. bottle)
    Medium-grade sandpaper
Paint (Delta Creamcoat -- 2-oz. bottle) colors:

    • Dunes Beige
    • Deep Coral
    • White
    • Hunter Green
    • Green Sea
    Paintbrushes:
    • 1" sponge brush
    • 1/4" angle
    • 10/0 liner
Paper plate with shiny finish (or palette paper)
Paper towels (guest recommends Bounty or Viva -- some others shed fiber particles that get in the paint)
Water jar or basin (whatever's on hand)
    Matte spray finish (Krylon)
    Candle with candleholder
    Matches (any)
    Large nail and tape
    Satin spray varnish (Krylon)

    1. Seal and sand wood piece.

    2. Pour Dunes Beige onto paper plate or palette paper and base-coat the wood using #10 or #12 flat brush.

    3. Light candle. Hold nail on top of flame, creating smoke. Safety alert: Be sure to tape the end of the nail that you'll be holding. The nail will get hot, and the tape will be a reminder of which end is cool. Hold the wood over the smoke and move in different directions.

Hint: Be careful not to get wood too close to the smoke as it will bubble the paint.

    4. When "smoked" (figure A), spray with matte spray finish to seal smoke onto wood.

Flower: (figure B -- instruction guide)

    5. With angle brush, load with Deep Coral paint, then dip tip into white. Paint on flower. (See Guest info, below, for tole-painting instructions information.)

    6. With liner brush, complete flower. Using Hunter Green and Green Sea, do stems and leaves.

    7. Varnish with satin spray varnish. Attach pen and enjoy!
