Soft sculpture dolls are lifelike -- yet whimsical -- creations shaped by the imagination of their creator.
|
JoAnn Pinto first began making soft sculpture dolls when her children were born . Pinto says it was a way of rediscovering herself, and brought a childlike sense of wonder and creativity back to her life. Creating soft sculpture dolls isn't difficult for hobbyists with a few basic sewing skills: - Pinto first creates a profile for the doll's head by stuffing T-shirt fabric with soft material, like fiberfill.
- She then begins sculpting features with a needle and thread. Pinto starts with the chin, and from there, sews forward and back and forth until a nose appears.
- Pinto cuts a slit where the eyes will go, fills the slits with glue, and adds glass beads.
- Next, she embroiders around the eyes to create a lashline and eyebrows. Pinto spends most of her time on the eyes to develop the character and expression of each doll.
- To create the body, she stuffs shapes and joins all the pieces together.
- To finish, Pinto attaches hair. She snips mohair from the hide and glues it to each doll's head.
