Materials: Hoop earring wires (gold or silver) Beach wire (18 gauge) Beads Beach glass Jeweler's pliers --flat nose, round needle nose and nippers Corks (new or used) Wooden skewers or sticks Towel or bead board Ruler E6000 glue Wine Charms - Select the largest sizes of hoops. These are available at jewelry supply stores, or craft stores. They have a loop at one end and the other end is straight. Also, select the charms you want to use.
Tip: If you do not want to buy beads, you can use old jewelry. - Layout bead design on a towel or bead board in the order of their final design.
- Slip beads on wire (figure A).
- Using round needle nose pliers, bend the straight end of the wire in a 90-degree angle- pointing up (figure B). Bending it up will allow it to create a small latch.
- Place charm on glass stem and hook in to the loop.
- To make a charm to place around the top of the wine bottle, you have to cut some sterling silver wire because they do not make earring hoops that large. Take the wire and start to round it off. With your round needle nose pliers make a coil at the end, but do not close it. With the flat nose pliers grab hold of the coil and start turning (figure C). Make the coil any size you prefer.
Note: The jeweler's tools are inexpensive and come in handy if you will be doing a lot of projects using wire. - String your beads on and then create a latch like you did for the glass charms.
Note: Wine charms would be great to add to a gift of wine goblets for a wedding present. Bottle Toppers. - Cut 12" strips of black wire.
- To wrap beach glass, twist the end of the wire around the middle of the glass.
- Twist the wire in a sharp right angle and wrap the glass in the opposite direction (figure D). This will create a cage around the beach glass and will prevent the glass from falling out. Continue until glass is locked in the wire.
- Use your flat nose pliers and crimp the end of the wire wrapped around the beach glass down nice and tight (figure E).
- Make as many of these as you would like for your bottle topper.
- Use the round nose pliers to place some crimps in the wire to give it some design (figure F).
- Bundle the wire by twisting the wires together using flat nose pliers.
- Trim wires 1" below the first twisting.
- Poke hold into center of cork using round nose pliers (figure G) or ice pick..
- Using the sharp end of a wooden skewer, fill hole with E6000 glue and insert wires. Let dry and shape glass sticks into design.
