    Figure B

    Materials:

Glasses -- new or even jelly jars
    Etching creme
    Brushes
    Plastic gloves
    Goggles
    Masking tape
    Scissors
    Newspaper
Water -- to wash the glass in
    Towel
    One adult

    1. Cut pieces of masking tape in a simple design. Try geometric shapes like triangles or squares.

    2. Make sure your glass is clean. Apply the tape smoothly, especially on rounded surfaces. Use your fingernail to rub around all the edges of the tape making sure they are sealed well (figure A). If you have any bubbles on the edges, the etching creme will seep under and your design will not be as crisp.

    3. Working over a protected area and wearing your goggles and gloves, brush the etching creme over your design (figure B) .

    4. Apply etching creme thick and spread it out quickly. If the creme thins out too much, just apply more. You should not be able to see the glass through the creme. Let your glass stand for at least five to ten minutes.

    5. Wash creme off with water.

    6. Peel off the tape.

    7. Wash glass with soap and water before using.

    Tips:

    • Have an adult supervise when using chemicals like etching creme.

    • Wear protective gear like gloves and safety glasses when using etching creme.

    • Read all manufacturers directions and warnings before using the etching creme.

    • Be careful when using scissors.
