To keep things moving at the boat ramp, host John Greviskis offers advice on launching your boat without making other boaters wait very long.

Prior to arriving at the ramp, your boat should be loaded with everything you need during your trip. When you arrive at the ramp, all you need to do is launch your boat into the water.

    • First, put the drain plug back into the garber drain (figure A). Your boat will take on water and sink without this.

    • Attach dock lines to the cleats on your boat, so they are ready to use when needed.

    • Take off the trailer strap.

    • Unplug the trailer lights. Doing so will prolong the life of your lamps.

    • Trim up the motor. If you have a passenger, have them trim down the motor once the boat is in the water.

    • Unhook the winch strap.

    • Back the boat and trailer into the water. Once the boat is floating, slowly pull the trailer out of the water.

Note: if you are launching the boat alone, tie a rope from the front of the boat to the trailer (figure B). Once the boat is floating, untie it from the trailer and then secure your boat to the dock with dock lines.

    • Make sure the motor has been trimmed down into the water.

    • Prime and then start the engine.
