    Clean the surface area, and then tape off the lower unit so that you can begin painting on the new skeg.


    To prime the area for painting, use a zinc-chromate primer, which will protect the metal from corrosion. After the primer has cured, apply a finish primer (figure A), then sand the area with 220 grit sandpaper.


    You will need to order the touch up paint from a marine store or boat dealer to match to the original color paint. Paint ( figure B) the primed area and allow time to dry. Once everything is dry, take off the tape and you are ready to go boating again with a new skeg!
