    Corrosion Control Anode

The final step in maintaining your outboard engine is to inspect the sacrificial anodes:

    • Trim Tab Anode -- These come in a variety of metals: aluminum, magnesium and zinc. Aluminum and magnesium anodes are for fresh water, and the zinc is for salt water boating. Once anodes have deteriorated by 50 percent or more, they should be replaced. These anodes serve two different functions:

      1. The trim tab anode, for example, counters the engine's natural tendency to pull off to the right as your running a vessel that has a single outboard on it. Naturally a right-hand rotating motor, when engaged in forward, spins to the right. The trim tab anode, by being cocked off in the opposite direction, counters the spin to the right. This means when the boat is running down the waterway, you can take your hands off the wheel and the boat will continue to run straight.

      2. The reason these anodes are called "sacrificial" is because once the electric current from the water attacks the weaker metal anode it can be replaced easily instead of damaging more important -- and expensive -- parts (such as the aluminum housing and steel props) on the boat.

    • Corrosion Control Anode -- The name says it all. This anode protects against corrosion, and when it becomes about 50 percent eaten, it's time to replace it.
