Host John Greviskis talks with guest Jeff Tapia about the types of rod holders (figure A) available.

    • Clamp-on rod holders are easily installed by placing them around the boat rail, and then tightening the bolts on the back side using a small wrench (figure B). Next, apply some ant-seize on the threads of the machine screws to prevent corrosion.

Note: There are stainless steel and nylon versions of clamp-on rod holders. The stainless steel holders are more durable, but are much more expensive than nylon. Nylon holders are typically used on smaller boats.

    • Gunnel-mounted rod holders are popular with boaters that do a lot of deep water trolling. Stainless steel is the best choice for salt-water fishing. Gunnel mounted rod holders mount directly into the gunnel of your boat through an opening that has been cut out, which will be flush with the top of the gunnel when installed (figure C).
