Today's bathrooms are built for unwinding, and that's certainly the case in the luxurious bathroom suite that interior designer Bill Murphy created for clients in Atlanta. With more than 1,700 square feet of space, the bath has room for a seating area, a whirlpool, exercise equipment, a spacious five-sided glass shower and a large dressing area, not to mention necessities such as toilets (this bath has two) and a vanity. Spending time in a bathroom this large and inviting is a great way to start the day and to unwind in the evening. Three walls of shuttered windows provide lovely views, whether the homeowners are relaxing on chaise longues or working out on the exercise equipment (figure A). A TV is strategically placed for easy viewing from anywhere in the room. A shapely marble vanity, custom-made to fit a round wall, is a focal point. Three oval silver-plated mirrors add elegance to the curved wall. A large whirlpool bath, big enough for two, and a five-sided glass shower (figure B) are placed centrally for drama. Heat elements under the marble floors keep the owners' feet warm when they step from the bath or shower. Private features of the room include his-and-hers water closets next to a huge dressing area/closet, featuring floor-to-ceiling mirrors and lots of storage space for clothes and shoes (figure C). A bit of the outdoors brought inside -- a plant with large leaves that match the scale of the room -- provides the finishing touch in this elegant spa bathroom.
