Interior designer Nan Sloan transforms a farmhouse's newly remodeled half-bathroom, giving it a rustic, primitive look that complements the decor of the rest of the house. Built at the turn of the century, the house is now home to a family of six. For a little more than $500, Nan solves the problem of limited storage space while adding considerable charm to the room.
A coat of Dijon-mustard-colored paint called colonial yellow cozies up the space and provides a bright background for the fairly subdued colors of the accessories to be added. An old cabinet found in the owner's garage becomes a primitive linen cabinet and helps solve the room's storage problem.
A dry-brushed coat of paprika paint gives it an old look (figure A) and blends nicely with a dining-room buffet shelf mounted over the sink. The buffet shelf, with its row of square drawers, holds items normally stored in a medicine cabinet and is topped with a discount-store mirror, an antique lamp and vintage accessories (figure B).
A primitive farm bench is set against one wall, with a false window-mirror above it. Twinkly holiday lights placed behind the stained-glass inserts edging the mirror add sparkle. Four wrought-iron hooks hung at the sides of the mirror provide easy towel hang-ups (figure C).
Framed nursery rhymes hang over the toilet, and an old milk box keeps reading material handy. An antique wire egg basket holds a dozen rolls of toilet paper, and a heavy old wooden toolbox holds a dozen rolled-up towels in six different colors -- a color for each family member (figure D).
