Technical specifications for the original 289 Cobra
Engine :
- High-performance Ford Fairlane V8 with pushrod-operated valves
- Bore and stroke: 4.00 x 2.87 in.
- Piston displacement: 289 cu. in.
- Compression ratio: 10 to 1
- Basic carburetion: Single four-barrel downdraft carburetor
- Output: 271 bhp at 5800 rpm*
- Torque: 269 lbs/ft at 4800 rpm.
*With the 289 engine, options and extras were available for performance increase, producing up to 370 bhp. Options were chiefly for racing applications and included solid valve lifters in place of hydraulic; different camshaft configuration; different ignition curve; multiple Weber downdraft carburetors with special manifold; oil cooler; tuned intake and exhaust systems, etc. Drive Train:
Four-speed Ford all-synchromesh transmission with floor shift. This was known as the "Sebring Type" gearbox, and was standard equipment. Gear ratios: - First: 2.36 to 1
- Second: 1.61 to 1
- Third: 1.20 to 1
- Fourth: Direct drive.
Clutch: Single dry plate with hydraulic actuation. Chassis and Suspension:
Tubular-type chassis based on two parallel main members. - Front suspension: Independent by transverse spring with lower A-frame and upper arm consisting of transverse leaf. Adjustable shocks and concentric rings.
- Rear suspension: Independent by transverse spring with lower A-frame and upper arm consisting of transverse leaf. Adjustable shocks and concentric rings.
Brakes:
Girling 12-inch disc on all four wheels. Dual master cylinders. Brake pad swept area: 550 sq. in.
Steering:
Rack and pinion. Adjustable steering wheel.
General:
- 12-volt electrical system with alternator
- Wide-based, 72-spoke wire wheels
- Knock-off hubcaps
- 18-gallon gas tank.
