DIY NETWORK TEAMS UP WITH REIGNING NATIONAL LEAGUE MVP JIMMY ROLLINS ON PROJECT MVP PREMIERING JULY 13 AT 8 P.M. ET Philadelphia Phillies Shortstop and 2007 National League MVP Jimmy Rollins Builds a Fitness Center in Half-Hour Special KNOXVILLE, Tenn. June 16, 2008 DIY Network is swinging for the fence in its new half-hour special, Project MVP. DIY called in the help of local baseball hero, Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, in turning a dilapidated conference room into a state-of-the-art fitness center at a North Philadelphia Recreation Center. The special, which premieres on Sunday, July 13 at 8 p.m. ET, is the first of two specials featuring current and past MVPs from the world of sports. The second special, premiering in September, will feature former San Francisco 49ers MVPs Jerry Rice and Steve Young. "I know how important it is to have a recreation department," says Rollins. "We had four or five of them (growing up) and when one was closed, we ran to the other. It was a place where you and your friends could hang out, you felt safe and your parents knew where you were. But more importantly, you were out being active. Sports are a great way to bring people who have nothing in common together." Amy Wynn Pastor, host and carpenter of DIYs Backyard Stadiums and Make a Move, leads a group of contractors and volunteers from the Olney Recreation Center along with Rollins in a two-day marathon to transform an ugly, rundown conference room into a state-of-the-art fitness room. Pastor, Rollins and the construction crew strip the room completely and gives it a new look from floor to ceiling. The new fitness center included recycled rubber floor mats, brand new exercise equipment, a flat-screen TV and a mural featuring Philadelphias skyline. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter makes a surprise visit to the recreation center bringing jumbo pretzels and a helping hand to the renovation.
