  • Generator Maintenance
  • Learn how to keep your RV generator running smoothly.
    From "RV Roadtrips"
    episode DRVR-112

Wendy and Tim Metro rely heavily on their generator when dry camping. Since buying the RV back in August it's always worked great; however, they dread the day that it may fail on them while RVing in the middle of nowhere.

Host Gary Bunzer explains the importance assembling a spare-parts kit for their generator. He shows them what to put into the kit to help them make easy repairs in case the generator fails while on the road.

The Metros enjoy this Class A motorhome when they hit the road, but since they frequent desert climates it's vital that the batteries are maintained properly.

And Means Dry Lake, with the emphasis on "dry", is a destination where Tim and Wendy Metro, and their boys T.J. and Drake, love to dirt bike!

    Kit includes:

    spark plugs
    spark-plug wires
    filters (oil, fuel and air)
    spare electrical terminals
    ignition parts
    spare quart of oil

    Materials and Tools:

    oil pan
    cleaning towel
    WD-40
    funnel
    air compressor
    wrench
    cloths or paper towels

    1. Inspect both the generator and exhaust systems.

    2. Clean the generator using an air compressor.

    3. Change the oil on the generator by doing the following:

      • Put the oil pan in place to catch drainage.

      • First let the generator warm up—it will drain the oil faster.

      • If the generator has an oil filter, make sure to change the filter as well.

      • Lube the gasket on top of new filter with oil before replacing.

      • Add new oil using a funnel and make sure to check levels often.

    4. Change the air filter (figure A).

    5. Clean any dust or residue that may have accumulated inside the filter compartment.

    6. Replace the spark plugs.

    7. Replace fuel filter.

    8. Lubricate all moving components.

    9. Exercise the generator and test AC electrical system.
