Host Gary Bunzer teaches the Phillips family about annual RV refrigerator maintenance. The four steps include: - How to clean the burner assembly and absorber coils with a vacuum attachment and damp cloth.
- Removing the roof vent and inspecting the condenser fins.
- Installing chicken wire inside the vent to prevent birds from entering.
- Soaking the components in acetone.
Materials:vacuum attachment damp cloth cleaning solution chicken wire acetone (colorless mobile flammable liquid) carburetor cleaner compressed air steel wool Tools: bucket cloth gloves screwdriver
- Take apart the burner assembly and take the gas line out.
- Clean the contact (figure A) and put cleaner on the actual terminals.
- Using a vacuum attachment, vacuum the dirt and corrosion inside the burner assembly. Run a damp cloth over the entire area to make sure it is completely clean.
- Addressing the individual components of the refrigerator on a worktable. First clean the electrode assembly with a piece of steel wool to clean up any corrosion that might be visible.
- Next further disassemble the burner assembly by taking the orifice out and soak it in acetone.
- Clean out any rust from the burner assembly tube and use the steel wool to brighten up the coils.
- To clean the liquid propane (or LP) line use carburetors cleaner followed by compressed air.
- Now that all the components have been cleaned you can reassemble the refrigerator.
- On overlooked component is on the roof. First remove the roof vent assembly above the refrigerator and check to make sure you have a protective screen in place.
- If you do not have a protective screen pick up 1/8" or 1/4" chicken wire and place it over the top to prevent birds from building a next over the warm condenser.
