    A leaky exhaust systems can send dangerous fumes to the inside of a car if it goes unnoticed. It's important to inspect your vehicle's exhaust system periodically. Here are some suggestions.


    • Make sure your vehicle is turned off, and the engine and exhaust pipes are cool.




    • You may need to raise your care up to inspect underneath. Take all necessary precautions for jacking or raising your vehicle.




    • Inspect the exhaust pipe visually, then tap on the exhaust pipe, muffler, resonator and catalytic converter lightly with a rubber mallet to see if you can find any soft spots.




    • Once you've checked the exhaust components, check the hangers to ensure that they are snug and holding the exhaust system in place properly.




    • Inspect for any holes in the bottom of the car body that may be allowing fumes to leak into the passenger compartment. Any such holes will need to be repaired.
